Day three - Anglesea to Apollo Bay - 76 km, 817 m - ride total 205 km

We left Anglesea camp on the dot of eight and headed out onto the trail - it's pretty easy really just as I said previously keep that ocean on your left and you can't go wrong. The day was cool enough, so I kept my riding jacket on through until lunchtime.

We made good timing averaging about 18.5 kph and with coffee and lunch stops included we were at the camp by about 2:00 p.m. which is good as it leaves plenty of time to do the things that need to be done.

At Fairhaven Peter pointed out the house that his family used to own - a lovely modern holiday home overlooking the ocean - he also pointed out that the earlier home was burnt to the ground in the 1983 Ash Wednesday fires - his mother was down at the beach for a swim when she was told to stay there - a short while later she watched as the house was totally engulfed and lost to the fire - she was eventually evacuated and got back to Melbourne some days later - brings meaning to the saying "only have the clothes (swimsuit in this case) that you stand up in.

We then passed through the entrance to the Great Ocean Road - a road made possible by the make work scheme of the 1930's depression era. The gradients were not too bad, there is a good shoulder to ride on and quite a few slow vehicle bays to allow slower travelers to pull over and allow the faster ones to pass. Speaking of which we did come across early on one such faster driver who kind of didn't make it completely around the bend and had stoved in the front left-hand corner of his car! With a posted speed limit at that point of 60 kph it looked like he had quite a bit of explaining to the police officer attending the crash!

The views from the road are quite something as you get to look down and along the many beaches and the surfers we saw out catching
the waves are certainly spoilt for choice.

Ian was keen to see a kangaroo (as am I) and he tells us he saw several before he left camp this morning - perhaps I wasn't looking hard enough - hopefully I will soon get to see one or more before too long and hopefully they will be at a safe distance coz I don't think it would be good to have one suddenly bounce out in front of you on the bike.

A good day all round - good riding, good weather and good views.
